Termites
Risks & Damages

Common Species in Malaysia
Several termite species exist in Malaysia, but three are especially widespread and harmful.
DRYWOOD TERMITES
Drywood termites infest dry, undecayed wood and are often found in furniture, flooring, and even wallpaper. They require no contact with soil, making them especially difficult to detect early. A key sign of their presence is frass—tiny wood pellets left behind as they tunnel through wood. Nests are commonly located within walls or ceilings, and occasional swarming may also occur.
SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES
Subterranean termites are the most destructive species, thriving in moist environments such as soil, drains, and foundations. They attack wood structures from underground, often going undetected until significant damage is done. Look out for mud tubes (their protective pathways), as well as pellet-like droppings near baseboards or structural joints.
DAMPWOOD TERMITES
Preferring wood with high moisture content, dampwood termites are usually found in rotting logs, tree stumps, or damp wooden structures like decks and windowsills. Though less common indoors, they pose serious risks when moisture issues are present. Their presence indicates poor ventilation or water damage—conditions that require immediate attention.
