Flies

Flies are insects from the order Diptera, commonly seen in both indoor and outdoor environments. In Malaysia’s warm and humid climate, flies reproduce rapidly and thrive in areas with decaying organic matter, waste, and food sources. While they seem harmless, flies can pose serious hygiene and health threats.

Common Species in Malaysia

Malaysia is home to several fly species, each with its own habits and preferred breeding sites.

HOUSE FLY

About 8–9mm long and dull grey in color, house flies have four stripes on the thorax and a sharply angled 4th wing vein. They thrive in environments rich in animal waste, garbage, and rotting organic material. House flies typically live between 1 to 7 weeks and are often found near food and waste indoors.

FLESH FLY

Measuring 18–27mm, flesh flies display a grey and black checkerboard pattern with three stripes on the abdomen. These flies are attracted to garbage, manure, and decomposing animal remains. Their life span ranges from 2 to 4 weeks, and they are frequently found in unsanitary areas.

BLOW FLY

Blow flies are 16–18mm in size and easily recognized by their metallic blue or green coloration. They prefer feeding on animal carcasses, waste, and garbage. Their life span is typically 2 to 4 weeks, and they often appear soon after animals die.

FRUIT FLY

These tiny flies are around 3mm long, yellowish-brown in color, and commonly hover around fruits. Fruit flies are drawn to decaying fruits and vegetables, often invading kitchens and garbage bins. They live for about 1 to 2 weeks.

PHORID FLY

Phorid flies are 3–4mm long and have a distinctive humpbacked appearance. Though similar in size to fruit flies, they prefer decaying vegetation and animal matter. Their life span is about 1 to 2 weeks, and they’re often found near trash and plumbing.

MOTH FLY

Measuring approximately 3mm, moth flies are covered in long hairs, giving them a fuzzy appearance. They prefer moist environments with decaying organic matter, especially around drains, sewers, and plumbing systems. Their life cycle lasts about 2 to 3 weeks.
